                     Posted Meeting - 7:00pm
Selectmen at the Library Trustees' Meeting
                          April 3, 1996

Selectmen Attending: Judith Murdoch, James Haggerty, Catherine
Kuchinski with Joseph Nugent, Board's Executive Secretary.
Charles Flynn arrived at 7:50pm.

Library Trustees: Arlene Finn, Chair; Barbara Nelson, John
Hanlon, Marie Hanlon, Faith Mosher, Linda Wall and Library
Director Barbara Ramey.

I. Questions and Answers Session: Trustees invited all Boards
with questions to attend their meeting tonight.  Selectmen posted
to attend to hear various explanations.

    A. Youth Services Librarian: use of the library has
increased over the last six years and the Trustees feel there is
a definite need for another professional position to maintain the
quality of life.  If granted, library would be open 9-10 hours
more each week.

    B. Low Budget: services have increased 88% over last six
years; 50,000 for circulation, open 33 hours for the public;
always 2 personnel in building for safety; Friday closing as the
least used day of the week.  Discussion of past override for the
library, new building, trust funds available and comparison
charts of surrounding towns.

     C. Friday Closing: Murdoch adamant that Friday should be
open - too many complaints heard about having to transport
children out of Town on Fridays to use libraries.

    D. Librarian Salary Increase Request: equity justification
discussed; 15% increase not feasible in one year.  Overall
presentation of the budget requests should be upgraded for the
FinCom and Town Meeting - Market your requests with information
and tact - show what the dollars would bring the Town in
increased services.

II. Closing: Selectmen left at 8:55pm for the Trustees to go on
with their meeting.
